Céline Dessberg’s music is a delicate blend of tradition and modernity, of two cultures, of chanson and a laid-back psychedelic sound that has triumphed on playlists in recent years. As a singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, Dessberg manages to interweave her Mongolian and French roots time and again; her pieces are clearly inspired by the European school, which she guides into Central Asian realms—sometimes subtly, sometimes more forthrightly—by way of the yatga, a Mongolian zither. This fusion feels simultaneously familiar and alien, and it is this ambivalence that makes it so fascinating.
