Gerald Donald is a key figure in Detroit electro and second-wave techno. With his project Drexciya (with James Stinson), he translated the myth of Atlantis into an Afrofuturist sonic emancipation fiction; in parallel, and particularly since Stinson’s death in 2002, he has devoted himself to solo projects such as Arpanet and Dopplereffekt. In a style even more minimalist and edgy than that of Drexciya, Donald’s Dopplereffekt (named after an acoustic phenomenon) alternates between different forms of synthesis. His work is characterised by relentless drum patterns that drive the tracks forward with raw energy, whilst vocoder vocals rave about transhumanism. In this way, he has created some true milestones in electro and techno history, such as Gesamtkunstwerk, and the most recent release, Neurotelepathy.
